Whether she’s playing beachside venues or sharing mixes online, DJ Sara Collado has steadily built a following through her unique sound and deep love for music. In this interview, Sara shares her journey into DJing, her creative process, and advice for anyone curious about getting behind the decks.
What was the moment or experience that made you want to become a DJ?
I think I’ve always had a deep connection with electronic music, even more so than with other genres. That connection was definitely a big spark that made me realize at a young age that I wanted to get involved in more ways than just listening. I’d say it really clicked for me when I started discovering dubstep festivals. Even though that’s not the genre I play today, it was a starting point.
How would you describe your sound and musical style in three words?
Groovy (always), sexy, and melodic.
What’s your go-to track that always gets people dancing?
Usually, I lean toward tracks that people already know or are familiar with something classic. Dropping a house classic like “So Many Times” by Gadjo & Alexandra Prince always works. But if you ask me personally, I’ll go crazy for “Hey Hey” by Dennis Ferrer or “Art On The Road” by Supernova though that one’s a bit less known.
If someone wants to start DJing today, what’s the first step you’d recommend?
First, ask yourself if this is really what you want to do. It might look simple from the outside, but no one talks enough about how mentally and physically strong you have to be to deal with certain situations. Once you’re clear on that, it’s just about dedicating time and building a solid music library.
Do you have a favorite city or country to play in, and what makes it special?
I’d love to play on my neighboring island, Ibiza. You already know why it’s so special. But my ultimate dream? Chicago. That’s my final boss fantasy.
